“Know yourself.”
This is a maxim inscribed on a stone slab on the porch of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi in ancient Greece. Humanity has shown great concern for its own destiny since ancient times. For over two thousand years, the Chinese have actively explored the origins and destinations of life, holding persistent and mystical perceptions of fate within their ideology. The results of exploration and perception have enriched and broadened our understanding of Chinese people's outlook on life today. On one hand, as an orthodox culture, interpretations and regulations about life from Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism have profoundly influenced people's daily lives and value orientations; on the other hand, as popular culture, a set of practical, secular philosophies of life established by ancient people to understand themselves and grasp the future—such as astrology, physiognomy, divination, and fortune-telling—have settled in people's hearts, as if they are elixirs for seeking happiness and avoiding disasters.
The orthodox culture we speak of is intertwined with popular culture. The popular culture exploring fate has flourished throughout Chinese history and is an important, mystical part of traditional culture. Among this popular culture, physiognomy is the second most mysterious and longest-standing branch after the Eight Trigrams.
When mentioning physiognomy, a flash of lightning suddenly crosses our mind, as if a glimmer of hope flashes in the darkness. But when the darkness passes and the lightning disappears, our souls suddenly become ambiguous, giving rise to many doubts:
What is physiognomy? Are the street vendors wearing square scarves, closing their eyes, glaring, pinching their hands, stomping their feet, and making intricate calculations the practitioners and disseminators of physiognomy? Are they the ones who clear the fog for secular people, point out the way across the迷津, and pave the road to happiness? Since they are experts who understand faces, know people, and can see into the past and future, why don't they look into a bronze mirror or examine their own faces? Is their appearance destined to be humble and pitiable, only fit to be lowly physiognomists?
What is the basis of physiognomy? Why can physiognomy grasp people's thoughts like a ghost and accompany them through a long life? Why are people willing to entrust their fate to their physical appearance inherited from their parents? How much do street physiognomists really understand about physiognomy? Why are their spontaneous, off-the-cuff remarks often regarded as evidence-based divine laws of fate? Are physiognomists spreading the truth of life or deceiving with lies?
Is physiognomy truly miraculous? Why do some people with similar appearances have vastly different destinies? According to physiognomy, prominent pupils are considered good, yet Shun's eyes had prominent pupils, as did Xiang Yu's, and Li Yu of the Five Dynasties had prominent pupils, yet their fates were very different! Why did Xunzi loudly proclaim “not physiognomy”? Why did sages and wise men of all generations denounce physiognomy as baseless nonsense?
Is physiognomy superstition? Why are there often crowds gathering in front of physiognomists, with “officials and commoners alike gathering, and people frequently filling the place”? Are people blindly entrusting their fate to the persuasive words of physiognomists? Why are stories about the “miraculous” effects of physiognomy recorded in history and spread without official endorsement, with people passing them down from generation to generation with enthusiasm? Why did poet Du Mu lament “the truth of physiognomy is indeed not false”? If physiognomy is a scam, why have countless people and officials flocked to it for thousands of years, never tiring of it?
Why is physiognomy so mysterious? Why does the book 'True Balance of Physiognomy' say “a nose that is blue indicates disaster within ninety days, affecting descendants and involving fire calamities; combined with a dark line connecting the nose to the middle of the face, it predicts imprisonment, the death of a spouse, and other disasters”? Is a blue nose really so unlucky? Is this the profound and unfathomable art of physiognomy, or the pretentiousness of physiognomists? People chase after physiognomy, entrusting unpredictable fate to its elusive principles—are they doing so merely for that ambiguous comfort? We still have many doubts. Although we can no longer tolerate these doubts occupying our hearts for long, we are even less able to accept physiognomists playing with the public’s desire for predictions under the guise of physiognomy, or scholars dismissing physiognomy with a few strokes and then abandoning it. We need courage and rationality to unravel the knots in our hearts, and also have the responsibility to unveil the mystery of physiognomy, allowing the sunlight of the new century to reveal its true nature.
