This set of materials was collected and organized by the Yijing Mysticism Data Network, hoping to assist your study of Liu Ren Divine Lessons.

Preface

In traditional Chinese culture, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism form the main framework of the cultural heritage. Among them, Confucianism has the greatest influence on secular society, and the mainstream worldview, outlook on life, and values of the Chinese nation mainly originate from Confucian scholarly traditions.

Within the profound and extensive Confucian doctrines, the Four Books and Five Classics are undoubtedly its core teachings. The Four Books include: 'The Great Learning,' 'The Doctrine of the Mean,' 'The Analects,' and 'Mencius'; the Five Classics include: 'The Book of Changes (Yijing),' 'Poetry,' 'The Book of Documents,' 'The Book of Rites,' and 'Spring and Autumn Annals.' As an organic inheritance system of Confucian thought, the Four Books and Five Classics are collectively called
‘The Head of All Classics’ by scholars. The Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, in the 'Imperial Preface to the Yijing Lecture,' stated:

I believe that the imperial way is contained in the Six Classics, which exhaustively explore the nature of heaven and man, open the understanding of change for the common people, and benefit all things. Its principles are most thoroughly expressed in the 'Yijing,' which combines the imagery established by the Four Sages and the explanations of hexagrams and texts, making it comprehensive and complete. Since ancient times, the Way of the world from Fu Xi, Shennong, Huangdi, Yao, Shun, and King has all been derived from this.

The texts of the 'Poetry' and 'Book of Documents,' the musical instruments of 'Liji,' and the actions recorded in 'Spring and Autumn' are all interconnected with the 'Yijing.' Han scholar Ban Gu said: 'The Six Arts encompass the Way of the Five Constants, and the 'Yijing' is the origin; how could it not be trustworthy?'
From the above paragraph, it is evident that from the Han Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty, the 'Yijing' has been regarded as the 'origin of all classics.' Therefore, in a certain sense, the 'Yijing' can be viewed as the fundamental root of traditional Chinese culture.

As the ultimate source of Chinese traditional culture, the 'Yijing' is characterized by its vast and all-encompassing Dao, which can provide guidance for any academic or cultural field; the birth and development of traditional Chinese divination and mathematical sciences (application culture of the 'Yijing') also owe much to the Dao of the 'Yijing.' The 'Complete Bibliography of the Four Libraries' states: 'The rise of divination sciences mostly occurred after the Qin and Han dynasties. Its essence lies in the interplay of yin and yang, the Five Elements, and their transformations, all branches of the 'Yijing,' transmitted with various interpretations!' As a branch of the 'Yijing,' the divination culture's life is deeply rooted in the principles of the 'Yijing.'

The core of numerology and divination culture is to use the principles of the 'Yijing' for prediction. Ancient people relied on the 'Yijing' to develop many mathematical prediction models. Historically, popular methods include divination by casting lots, fire pearl forest method, four pillars, geomancy, physiognomy, form methods, star astrology, and weather omen, among dozens of others. Today, domestically and internationally, the most popular methods include the four pillars, six yao hexagram method, Liu Ren, Qimen Dunjia, physiognomy, and geography. These major predictive models can, to some extent, forecast human affairs and resolve doubts. Among these, the Great Liu Ren is renowned for its astonishing predictive accuracy and is highly esteemed. Therefore, the ancient saying that Liu Ren excels in human affairs prediction has persisted. As a leading application of traditional divination culture, the Great Liu Ren has been highly valued by scholars of divination since ancient times!

Since the 1990s, a wave of interest in studying and applying divination sciences (including using numerology models for predicting human affairs) has surged across mainland China. After more than a decade of development, domestic research on the application of divination sciences has gradually advanced from introductory and foundational studies to more complex and precise high-end research. The recent popularity of Qimen Dunjia and the Great Liu Ren demonstrates the deepening and progress of folk divination research. Especially, the Great Liu Ren (also known as Ren Studies) as the most effective practical method of the 'Yijing' increasingly shows its significant predictive and decision-making value in contemporary society.
To promote the research and development of Ren Studies in the new century and new era, and to provide scholars and divination practitioners with valuable materials for study, we have carefully selected and proofread five ancient Liu Ren texts from numerous classical books to form a modern edition of Liu Ren classics for readers.

This set (comprising three volumes) of Liu Ren classics includes the following five ancient Liu Ren texts:
1. 'Great Complete of Liu Ren' by Ming Guo Yuqing, twelve volumes; 2. 'Liu Ren Case Studies' by Song Shao Yanhhe, compiled by Qing Cheng Aihan, four volumes; 3. 'Liu Ren Guide' by Ming Chen Gongxian, five volumes; 4. 'Ren Gui' by an anonymous author, seven volumes; 5. 'Liu Ren Miscellaneous Notes' by Qing Cheng Aihan, no volumes specified.

The above five ancient Liu Ren texts essentially cover all aspects of Liu Ren, forming a relatively complete and organized knowledge system. Generally, 'Great Complete of Liu Ren' mainly compiles common knowledge, methods, and basic theories of Liu Ren, serving as a foundational reference for all Liu Ren research. 'Liu Ren Case Studies' and 'Liu Ren Guide' focus on practical application of Liu Ren theories for decision-making and prediction, extensively including case studies from the Song and Ming dynasties, providing valuable reference for scholars studying Liu Ren. 'Ren Gui' was historically popular as a 'secret manual' among folk practitioners, mainly proposing the 'Imagery' theory in Liu Ren methods, offering enlightening insights into Liu Ren application research. 'Liu Ren Miscellaneous Notes' by Qing Cheng Aihan records personal insights and experiences in studying and applying Liu Ren during the Daoguang period, providing sharp explanations and answers to various doubts in Liu Ren research, making it one of the best 'explanatory' books in Liu Ren history. These five texts encompass fundamental theories, methodological research, problem-solving, and practical examples, constituting essential classics in Liu Ren studies.

To facilitate readers' study and research, our proofreading and annotation work includes:
1. Replacing all traditional Chinese characters in the original texts with modern simplified characters to suit contemporary readers' habits and deepen understanding.
2. Segmenting sentences in the original texts, adding punctuation according to sentence meaning, and converting vertical writing to horizontal layout.
3. Collating the original texts, correcting errors, omissions, and distortions, striving to ensure the coherence of the original text and clarity of the meaning.

4. Standardizing the layout of notes and illustrations, aiming for a complete and aesthetically pleasing presentation.

Xu Weigang, September 20, 2007, in Beijing

Introduction

The 'Six Ren Compendium' consists of twelve volumes, without author attribution, engraved during the Ming Dynasty, with a colophon at the beginning edited by Guo Yuqing. During the Qing Dynasty, it was included in the 'Complete Library of the Four Treasuries' under the categories of arts and sciences, specifically in divination, and also circulated as a rare and popular edition of the Four Treasuries.

Volume One: Starts with the methods of entry, discusses the mnemonic chants of the nine main schools, details the summaries of the Three Transmissions and the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, divine stars, and methods to break harmful influences and conflicts. It also includes sixty-four lesson poems, essentially a systematic summary and organization of the basic knowledge of the Ren studies.

Volume Two: Focuses on the basic origins, concepts, significance, and applications of the divine stars of the Twelve Earthly Branches and the Twelve Heavenly Generals, emphasizing the core importance of star information in Ren studies.

Volume Three: Explains the fundamental features and patterns of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, the Four Lessons, the Three Transmissions, and the methods of activation and application in Ren divination. It also includes famous poetic mnemonics from various dynasties, such as 'Collection of Secrets for Illuminating the Heart,' 'Post-Elbow Classic,' and 'Jade Success Song.'

Volume Four: Contains three important essays: 'The Bag of Secrets,' 'Cloud Sky Essay,' and 'Three Talents Essay.' However, content-wise, 'Cloud Sky Essay' and 'Three Talents Essay' discuss the Golden Formula, seemingly unrelated to Six Ren.

Volumes Five to Eight: These four volumes compile 720 types of Ren divination methods corresponding to the sixty-four hexagrams, forming the 'Lesson Classics.' The typical structure includes the lesson name definition, lesson symbols, examples, corrections, and mnemonic chants. 'Lesson Classics' serve as the foundational theoretical research in Six Ren, with significant reference value.

Volumes Nine and Ten: These two volumes include the 'Bi Fa Essay' compiled by Ling Fu during the Song Dynasty. The 'Bi Fa Essay' is an important practical methodology in Ren studies, around which scholars throughout history have centered their practice.

Volumes Eleven and Twelve: Contain detailed classifications of the twelve palaces and star regions, as well as the administrative divisions of the Ming Dynasty, offering considerable historical reference value but limited relevance to the practical application of Ren studies.
Overall, the 'Six Ren Compendium' is a compilation and summary of knowledge and materials from various dynasties in Ren studies. Therefore, the 'Bibliotheca Sinica Synopsis' states: 'It is a comprehensive and concise overview, indeed a collection of the Six Ren tradition.' However, it also has shortcomings: firstly, it lacks clear and thorough explanations of the nine main schools, noble person examples, the Heaven and Earth charts, and the Moon generals, making it difficult for beginners to truly get started; additionally, the 'Six Ren Compendium' largely lacks practical examples, with only a few superficial cases in the 'Lesson Classics,' which lack operational details, posing obstacles for beginners to improve their application skills.

This edition has been collated and corrected based on the 'Six Ren Compendium' from the sixth volume of the 'Four Treasuries Arts and Sciences Series' published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House in 1991, and the modern version of the 'Six Ren Compendium' included in the second volume of the 'Introduction to Chinese Divination Techniques and Methods' published by People's China Publishing House in 1992. Combining these two editions with detailed revisions and additions, providing readers with a high-quality modern edition of the 'Six Ren Compendium.'

Data Screenshot

Data Directory

Xu Weigang Collated Edition - Six Ren Compendium.pdf

[188

post-98474","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-liuren
["GET
