Liu Ren, Tai Yi, and Qi Men are collectively known as the "Three Formulas" in ancient mathematical and divination sciences, representing the highest level of predictive knowledge. The Liu Ren formula is based on ancient Chinese concepts of Heaven's Mandate and the correspondence between Heaven and Humanity. It uses the chart (Heaven Plate and Earth Plate) as a calculation tool and employs the principles of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements' mutual generation and restraint as a thinking method. In ancient numerology and divination studies, it has become a unique school. The Liu Ren formula consists of a total of 8,640 configurations, divided into 64 types, also called 64 lessons, each corresponding to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. It is said that the Six Ren method was created during the time of Emperor Huang's battle against Chiyou. Although this legend is not entirely credible, there are indeed numerous scattered records about the Six Ren method in pre-Qin texts. According to the Siku Quanshu,
The "Liuren Comprehensive Summary" states: "Examining the 'Guoyu'... especially the Shang Gong of Yu, all have meanings related to Liuren." According to historical records, the Liuren method had been widely adopted at least during the Warring States period.
