The 'Ancient and Modern Illustrated Bibliography' is the largest existing comprehensive catalog in China with the richest materials. It is divided into three categories: Compilation, Canon, and Department. Its characteristic lies in thoroughly implementing the principle of 'grouping similar matters,' including ancient literary materials from prehistoric times to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The content covers over 15,000 volumes of classics, histories, philosophies, and anthologies, preserving almost all the sources and veins of various disciplines. The 'Ancient and Modern Illustrated Bibliography' is the most comprehensive and richest collection of traditional Chinese culture, possessing unparalleled value in literature, history, cultural relics, and editions.
This set of books was edited by Chen Menglei during the Kangxi period (1650-1741) and took twenty-eight years to complete. In the 37th year of Kangxi (1698), Chen Menglei compiled the 'Bibliography Compilation' based on the collections of Xi Yi Tang and his family, which included over 15,000 volumes of classics, histories, philosophies, and anthologies. The first draft was completed in April of the 45th year of Kangxi. After reviewing, Kangxi believed further revisions were needed, and the book was renamed 'Ancient and Modern Illustrated Bibliography.' After Kangxi's death, Yongzheng ordered the re-editing and proofreading of the 'Ancient and Modern Illustrated Bibliography' by the official responsible for lectures and the Minister of Revenue, Jiang Tingxi. Yongzheng praised: 'Connecting ancient and modern, integrating classics and histories, astronomy and geography, all are illustrated.'
