Traditional astrology and the Five Arts encompass everything, covering nearly infinite scope. Their yin-yang fluctuations and the changes in the five elements' generation, destruction, and transformation do not merely echo the vast universe of heaven and earth but complement each other. The related philosophical theories all originate from this. Ancient sages observed celestial phenomena to predict political fortunes and misfortunes, understanding the rise and decline of the world; they examined the land to clarify the changes in Earth's energy, contemplating the endless creation of heaven and earth; they adjusted their lives according to the strength of the energy fields to dwell in auspicious conditions, aiming to conform to the natural evolution of the universe. To enable all beings to occupy their proper places between heaven and earth, and to consider the human body as a small universe encompassing all phenomena of heaven and earth—despite distinctions of wealth, nobility, debt, and low status—birth, aging, illness, and death are unavoidable. How fair and profound are the creations of heaven and earth!
China's traditional Five Arts include medicine, cultivation, destiny analysis, physiognomy, divination, and geomancy—all originating from the 'I Ching' and inseparable from the theoretical system of yin-yang and the five elements' generation, destruction, and transformation. Over thousands of years, talented individuals have emerged, such as King Wen of Zhou—'Eight Trigrams,' Sun Wu—'Sun Tzu's Art of War,' Xu Ziping—'Zi Ping Method,' Chen Xiyi—'Zi Wei Dou Shu,' Li Chunfeng—'Tui Bei Tu,' Shao Kangjie—'Huang Ji Jing Shi,' Liu Buwen—'Burning Biscuit Song'—all are classic works passed down for millennia, greatly influencing later generations. Figures like the Dream Son of the Investiture of the Gods or Zhuge Liang of the Three Kingdoms era are well-known for applying the Five Arts in their scholarship.
However, the wisdom of ancient sages and forecasters, passed down through generations, was lost during the burning of books and burying of scholars by the Qin Dynasty, destroyed again in the ashes of Epang Palace, and repeatedly disrupted by successive dynasties. Some rare texts on yin-yang and the five elements were completely destroyed, causing a break in China's scientific research into harnessing natural magnetic fields for thousands of years. After the 1930s, under the rule of atheists from the Communist Party in China, the practice of the Five Arts was further diminished.
In the early Republic period, as Western influence grew, some self-proclaimed prophets and high-level intellectuals, relying on foreign powers and flattering Westerners, filled major media outlets with Western astrology, making it easy for the younger generation to memorize and recite. The Eastern astrology 'Zi Wei Dou Shu,' preserved by ancient sages, was neglected, allowed to decline, and even regarded as superstition and outdated—an unfortunate loss of a precious treasure!
In the 1960s, few relevant reference books could be found in Taiwanese bookstores. Starting in the 1970s, several advanced scholars promoted the study vigorously through domestic newspapers and magazines, bringing 'Zi Wei Dou Shu' back into the spotlight in Taiwan. Today, tutoring classes and master-level practitioners are everywhere, and related books flood bookstores and street stalls. Regardless of the content quality, it is a positive phenomenon for interested researchers. Unfortunately, most of these books focus on basic theories, with little in-depth exploration of key secrets, and differing schools of thought often criticize each other, lacking systematic organization. This leaves dedicated researchers at a loss and diminishes their confidence.
