We live in a complex and intricate world. This world is filled with many unresolved and difficult mysteries, as well as numerous unique cultural phenomena.
These peculiar cultural phenomena almost all have a history of thousands of years, and nearly all are global in nature. They transcend nations and languages, and can truly be said to be present everywhere at all times; they are also almost all vague in appearance, ambiguous in nature, and situated between right and wrong. Believers say they "exist," opponents say they "do not," some regard them as guiding principles, while others denounce them as superstition. For a long time, and to this day, no universally agreed conclusion has been reached.
The most common and ordinary among these unique cultural phenomena are:
Divination: In our country, it is the earliest main content recorded in writing, where burning tortoise shells for divination of good or bad fortune was once an important ritual and part of daily life for our ancestors; abroad, astrology also has a long history. Today, practitioners of divination are still widespread worldwide, with many different methods and numerous schools. It has been reported that President Reagan was also a believer in astrology. In our country, although divination is regarded as "superstition," there are still many people willing to spend some money on it, whether openly or secretly.
Physiognomy: There are face reading and palmistry. It is also popular worldwide and has remained enduringly popular, even giving rise to the Gypsy people known for their expertise in palmistry. Although we call it "feudal superstition," it still has a market in technologically advanced capitalist countries, and there are even "new developments" combining physiognomy with computers.
Feng Shui: It has been recorded as early as pre-Qin literature. It is said that our Feng Shui compass has become one of the objects heavily sought after and purchased by foreign enthusiasts; and the theory of Feng Shui is considered to be the earliest architectural theory in our country.
Dream analysis: For dreams that everyone experiences, some have long attempted to develop theoretical explanations, and there have even been professional "dream interpreters." The analysis of dreams has been described countless times in literary works, and many classics are famous for depicting "dreams." Ghost and spirit phenomena: These are also widespread across the globe and have persisted for thousands of years as a unique cultural phenomenon. Regarding these currently believed to be nonexistent entities, people from ancient times to the present have made billions of different descriptions, and there have been intense debates in theory. However, there is still a lack of insightful masterpieces that scientifically explain these phenomena.
These peculiar cultural phenomena are inherently extremely complex. Over thousands of years, various people, intentionally or unintentionally, have mixed water, falsehoods, and impurities into them, causing their true nature to become even more obscured under the dust of history, making it more difficult to distinguish their true essence. They have become a heavy spiritual legacy that we carry.
Regarding this heritage, adopting an attitude of non-recognition, turning a blind eye, and ignoring it is not acceptable. Simply dismissing it entirely and criticizing it all the way may feel satisfying, but history has shown that this approach not only fails to solve the problem but also makes it more complicated. Because, in the face of such unique cultural phenomena, the reverse psychology triggered by being ignored and criticized makes people more curious and more enthusiastic.
Admitting this is painful, but it is much better than refusing to admit it. In this regard, we indeed need a bit of "thorough materialist" and "fearless" courage. For this reason, we have decided to compile and publish a series called "Research Series on Mystical Culture."
The purpose of this series of books is to conduct thorough research in the hope of providing factual, analytical, and convincing conclusions about long-standing and widely involved mysterious cultural phenomena: if they indeed have value, to reveal the source of their vitality; if they are merely nonsense "superstitions," to expose the tricks behind their deception, so as to prevent people from being fooled again. In short, judging these peculiar cultural phenomena is not about power, climate, hats, or slogans, but must be based on diligent research and scientific conclusions derived from extensive material collection!
Considering the historical and current circumstances, it is unlikely that we will achieve this goal all at once. Therefore, we plan to complete this series over a longer period, publishing each volume once it is mature, without rushing or rushing to market, and without forcing out content that should not be published. However, to facilitate the smooth development of this research and to enable readers to make horizontal comparisons, we have also strictly selected a small number of foreign works as reference materials for publication. Some of these books may contain content that we find unappealing or are not accustomed to; we hope readers will approach them with a calm and objective attitude and avoid rushing to conclusions—whether affirmative or negative. We hope this series can have a long lifespan. We welcome various opinions from readers.
