The method of divination, which has eight gates: the correct timing is the vanguard gate, where divination is based on the main time, or the virtue of the day combined with ghost tomb, or the destruction, harm, and conflict of the hour, before the transmission lesson is completed, the auspicious or inauspicious signs are revealed first, called the vanguard.
The Monthly General is the Direct Affairs Gate, where divination is based on the monthly general plus the correct time, dividing the four lessons' yin principles, distinguishing the three transmissions' mutual creation and destruction, only gods can determine the disaster or blessing of the matter, only generals can know the auspicious or inauspicious of the spirits, hence called the Direct Affairs.
The Day Stem is the External Affairs Gate, where divination considers the person, actions, and plans as governed by the day, and the mutual creation, control, and transformation of the stems, hence called External Affairs.
The Branch Hour is the Internal Affairs Gate, where divination considers the residence, and to know the prosperity or decline of the residence, one must examine the rest and imprisonment of the hour; to know the disaster or blessing of the matter, one must observe the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the branch, hence called Internal Affairs.
The Beginning Transmission is the Origin Gate, where divination considers the initial response of the matter, if the transmission is auspicious, the matter is auspicious; if inauspicious, the matter is inauspicious: the key to blessing or disaster all starts here, hence called the Origin Gate.
The Middle Transmission is the Change Gate, where divination considers the middle response of the matter. If the initial is auspicious and the middle is inauspicious, the matter changes from good to bad:
If the initial is inauspicious and the middle is auspicious, the matter changes from bad to good. Hence called the Change Gate.
The Final Transmission is the Return Calculation Gate, where divination considers the end response of the matter. Even if the beginning and middle are inauspicious, the end may be auspicious, and the matter can be completed.
Even if the beginning and middle are auspicious, the end may be inauspicious, leading to regret at the conclusion. Hence called the Return Calculation Gate.
The Year and Destiny are the Variance Gate, where divination considers the change of the matter based on the year and destiny. Destiny responds to the person, and the year assists in usage; the transmission has definite auspicious or inauspicious signs, and people have different year and destiny. For example, if the transmission of wealth is generally auspicious, but the year destiny shows ghost signs, it becomes inauspicious; if the year destiny shows descendants, it becomes a word sign. Hence called the Variance Gate.
Important Points of Gods and Spirits
Discussion of the Virtue of Branches First
The Child starts from the first and moves through the twelve branches in order. All heavenly, monthly, and daily branches with the four virtues can turn inauspicious signs into auspicious ones. The virtue of the day is especially auspicious, but it should be thriving and not resting in imprisonment, such as when virtue combines with the stem to produce ghost signs, which still counts as virtue divination, because virtue can transform ghosts. Virtue entering transmission should avoid empty and falling spirits and gods of generals fighting externally.
All virtues below thieves and above development, when supported by noble spirits, are still considered auspicious. If there is no support or if there is a泄气 (leaking qi) and克主 (clashing master), it causes worry and joy.
All virtues returning to the day, combined with the Heavenly Noble, indicate unexpected joy: but it is not suitable for divination of litigation. When virtue of the day is below thieves and development, and supported by noble spirits, it is called the extinction virtue pattern, indicating邪正 (evil and righteousness) are on the same path. When virtue becomes the言星 (Speech Star), and also faces the Vermilion Bird, it is called the Wen Virtue Pattern, indicating that the divination will be supported by words, and there will be recommendations.
When virtue faces the four absolute stars and coincides with a凶将 (inauspicious general), it reduces its power by seventy percent.
On the Second of the Three Harmonies
The Three Types of Harmony are primarily based on Heavenly Stem combinations, with Support and Triplet Harmony following. To achieve complete auspiciousness, it must coincide with virtue, prosperity, joy, and divine presence, which can suppress all misfortunes. If it encounters misfortune and is combined with it, there will be no auspicious assistance, and it will oppose misfortune.
Any harmony that coincides with the day’s transmission and is accompanied by auspicious generals indicates harmony and achievement of joy.
Any support and Heavenly Stem mutual harmony is called the Same Heart Pattern. If it encounters punishment or harm, it secretly indicates jealousy within the same heart.
Any Three Harmonies entering the transmission are related to affairs involving connections and entanglements, which can only be understood after passing the month. It also indicates many familiar friends and acquaintances. When reaching the time of formation, decide by the Three Harmonies. For example, if the day is Yin, Wu, or Xu and the sky appears, it will be triggered. If the sky does not appear, the day and month will be completed with Xu.
Any Three Harmonies entering the transmission with a missing Earthly Branch is called the Bowed Waist Pattern. The matter must wait until the missing spirit appears before it can be accomplished, also known as the Empty One Waiting Pattern.
Furthermore, Three Harmonies entering the transmission with the day and Earthly Branchs coinciding are called the Gathering Pattern, indicating unexpected harmony or cooperation. Decide based on the auspicious divine that is gathered.
If the reading involves blaming others, it indicates that a noble person will assist or support.
Any harmony that coincides with virtue entering the transmission indicates that all matters are auspicious. Even if there are evil spirits, they also indicate misfortune or harmony.
Any Yin-Hai harmony is a Break Harmony, and Shen-Harmony is a Punishment Harmony, indicating that plans may be harmonious and smooth but may not succeed. If it is blessed by Qing virtue and prosperity, it still indicates smooth progress.
Any harmony entering the transmission, planning for timing, is only suitable for planning but cannot be immediately concluded. Not suitable for diagnosing illnesses or lawsuits.
Any Heavenly Queen Spirit and Queen Spirit forming a Six Harmonies indicates marriage and establishment.
Any use of Punishment and Break two harmonies indicates external auspiciousness but internal misfortune. The matter requires effort, but ultimately will be resolved.
When encountering empty and falling emptiness and seeing punishment or harm, it indicates hidden dangers within harmony, but virtue can resolve it.
Any harmony where the Spirit overcomes the Day or coincides with the Snake, Tiger, or Vermilion indicates harm within the harmony. Do not entrust others with plans; rely on honesty and trustworthiness. The reverse pattern is insufficient.
