Preface

Since 1989, I have had the opportunity to come into contact with traditional Chinese divination and numerology. At that time, the books I saw on I Ching were mostly photocopies of ancient divination texts. I gradually began to purchase materials related to this field by mail, covering everything from the Bagua to Six Lines, Plum Blossom Divination, Zi Ping Fate Studies, Feng Shui and the Three Formulas, Astrology, Physiognomy, Auspicious Date Selection, and Character Reading—almost everything in this area. I remember that in 1990, I purchased my first Zi Ping fate book, which was an ancient edition published by Guangyi Bookstore during the Republic of China period, called "Yuan Hai Zi Ping." From then on, I started my study and research of Zi Ping fate studies. In the spring of 1992, I bought four volumes of the "Si Ku Divination Series" published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House at the Suzhou Book Market, which included reprints of the Ming Dynasty scholar Wan Minying's works. The Three Destiny ClassicsThis book on the fate and destiny of this position is a masterpiece. After reading it, my perspective gradually broadened, and I gained a basic and comprehensive understanding of traditional Chinese Zi Ping destiny theory.

In 2001, I arrived in Beijing. Since my business was not going smoothly, I revisited the study of Zi Ping Ming Xue, which I had previously abandoned (though it was actually a sporadic research process). I repeatedly read and studied "Yuan Hai Zi Ping" by Guang Yi Publishing House from the Republic of China period in Shanghai. This book is an ancient edition, with marginal annotations on each page. At that time, I was most confused about the divine favor definition in the "Jishan Chapter" of "Yuan Hai Zi Ping," because many of the marginal notes repeatedly discussed the concept of divine favor, stating that the so-called divine favor is the influence of the person element in the lunar month. These annotations caused me great doubt—why did "Yuan Hai Zi Ping" describe divine favor this way? This was completely different from the popular concept of divine favor in most contemporary astrology books, which is based on the strength of the day master. In the common view, if the day master is strong, the divine favor is the officer or food and injury gods that control or drain the day master; if weak, it is the supportive seals and assistants that help the day master. This popular view of divine favor has no connection with the concept in "Yuan Hai Zi Ping." Through in-depth reflection and research on the definition of divine favor, and using it as a breakthrough point, by the summer of 2002, I finally gained a comprehensive understanding of the core astrology content—pattern theory—in classic traditional astrology texts such as "Yuan Hai Zi Ping," "Zi Ping Zhen Quan," and "San Ming Tong Hui." I discovered that the direction of modern astrology research since the Republic of China era was fundamentally mistaken. It was this significant discovery and understanding that motivated me, between 2002 and 2003, to write articles for the domestic astrology journal "Yi Hai Fang Zhou," including "Original Meaning of Bazi Divine Favor Examination" and "Essentials of the Orthodoxy of Bazi Astrology," which were published in this journal. I began to promote the core concept of traditional Zi Ping astrology—pattern theory.

My Zi Ping fate system pattern theory, from an academic perspective, is indeed based on "Yuanhai Zi Ping."The Three Destiny ClassicsZi Ping Zhen JuanShenfeng TongkaoThe basic theoretical framework of pattern theory, which relies on ancient destiny books, was discovered from these texts. It should be clarified that my discovery of the pattern theory and the original meaning of "Zi Ping Zhen Juan" was entirely based on my own research and was not inspired by any book or author. Many who have studied pattern theory know that I mentioned Mr. Liang Xiangrun from Taiwan and Mr. Lu Zhiji from the United States because these two individuals are also clear researchers who discovered the true meaning of traditional destiny pattern theory. Therefore, many people speculate that my research on pattern theory was academically inspired by these two scholars. In fact, that is not the case. At the end of 2003, I saw a book titled "Detailed Explanation of Lifelong Annual Fortune" by Mr. Liang Xiangrun in a bookstore at Guangcai Market on the South Third Ring Road in Beijing, priced at ten yuan. As I browsed through this book, I realized that my main ideas and thoughts on pattern theory had already been clearly presented in this scholar’s work. At that moment, I felt that this elder was a kindred spirit (before 2003, I had no knowledge of Mr. Liang Xiangrun from Taiwan), and we were colleagues in the same field. That is why I mentioned Mr. Liang in my work. Regarding Mr. Lu Zhiji’s book "Chinese Eight Characters Wisdom," I also saw it in 2003 at the Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau reading room of the National Library in Beijing. At that time, I just skimmed through it and initially understood that Mr. Lu’s two systems of destiny calculation—the "Day Master Network" and the "Month Command Network"—were roughly the same as the original meaning of pattern theory I discovered. This made me realize that Mr. Lu’s views aligned with mine, making him a fellow researcher with similar perspectives. Therefore, I also mentioned Mr. Lu in my book, considering both him and Mr. Liang as rare clear-minded destiny scholars, my peers and kindred spirits. Mentioning them in my work was to show that my pattern theory is not solely my own opinion. In fact, during my rediscovery of pattern theory, I was not inspired by Mr. Lu or Mr. Liang at all. It was only after I clarified the fundamental meaning of Zi Ping destiny pattern theory that I found their views to be remarkably similar to mine. It can be said that before I publicly shared my destiny viewpoints, no one in the Chinese destiny community discussed pattern theory. It was only after my book was published that the Chinese destiny community began to truly pay attention to traditional classical destiny pattern theory. To this day, more researchers have quietly started studying pattern theory domestically, and it has long been popular online.

The theory of pattern analysis has re-emerged for over five years, and my research on destiny studies has been further deepened. This new book, "Practical Guide to Zi Ping," is the latest research achievement of mine in recent years. In this new book, besides deepening and systematizing the theory of pattern analysis, I also introduce a theory based on the ancient destiny book "Qiong Tong Bao Jian," which is also called the Qiong Tong Theory. This theory is presented as an alternative method for analyzing and understanding fate, coexisting with the pattern analysis theory. It is important to note that the pattern analysis theory is a system for four-pillar prediction, while the Qiong Tong Theory emphasizes specific aspects of four-pillar prediction. Both theories have their own focus and systems, complementing each other, and are all authentic studies of Zi Ping destiny studies. Based on these two theories, I have listed numerous practical case studies in this book, demonstrating the significant value of these theories in understanding human destiny. In addition to these contents, the book also includes many essays on destiny studies to enrich the understanding of the pattern analysis and Qiong Tong theories, revealing more true knowledge of destiny studies and helping researchers quickly master these two authentic theories.

From 1989 to 2009, my study of metaphysics has spanned a total of 20 years. Generally speaking, my research on metaphysics is based on traditional mainstream methods, emphasizing the study of major techniques within metaphysics, believing that learning and understanding them can grasp the essence of Chinese traditional metaphysics. For these major techniques, I have always emphasized following an orthodox research approach, which is based on respecting tradition, respecting classics, respecting ancestors, and valuing practice. I do not engage in illegitimate methods, false doctrines, or deceive masters and ancestors. I do not form factions or alliances, nor do I indulge in conjecture and nonsense. I truly inherit the essence of traditional major techniques and aim to carry them forward in this new era. Regarding research goals, I emphasize having ambition, setting lofty objectives, and working hard. Only then can one master the major techniques of metaphysics thoroughly, learn well, and become proficient, thereby elevating one's personal thoughts and insights, gaining great wisdom, understanding various methods, and embracing all phenomena. This enables me to guide others, connect with all beings, and serve society.

Zi Ping Ming Xue, as the fundamental method in traditional numerology and the ancestral law within ancestral laws, holds unparalleled importance. Therefore, my understanding is that studying traditional Chinese numerology is best started from Zi Ping Ming Xue. Grasping this Zi Ping Ming Xue means grasping the root of Chinese numerology. This is because, in traditional numerology, only Zi Ping Ming Xue can fully and systematically accurately reflect a person's overall life destiny. Only by mastering this overall life pattern can one make lifelong plans; only then is it possible to provide forward-looking guidance for major life events; only in this way can Zi Ping Ming Xue demonstrate its historical significance and practical social value.
What I have thought and considered is quite lengthy to say, but it is a heartfelt expression, serving as an introduction.
